what is low vision?

Low vision services are provided to individuals with reduced visual acuity or visual field deficit that is not correctable by conventional spectacles, contact lenses or surgery.

Low vision is a vision condition that makes it difficult or impossible to see well enough to go about your daily activities. While low vision may seem like just another vision problem, it's completely different than ordinary nearsightedness or farsightedness.

If you have low vision, Dr Grace Tran Chi at Diamond Vision Optometry will provide guidance and education to aid in your experience.

Low Vision Information
Low vision can develop for a variety of reasons.  Some common causes include:
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Traumatic eye injury
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Stroke
  • Inherited retinal eye disease (retinitis pigmentosa)
If you have any of the conditions above, the team at Diamond Vision Optometry monitors you for signs of low vision during your regular checkups. As soon as you show signs of low vision, your eye doctor can help you make the most of the vision that you still have.

What is the treatment for low vision?

Assessing low vision is a layered process, and the team at Diamond Vision Optometry will:
  • Collect a detailed history of social and visual needs.
  • Measure your residual vision
  • Measure your residual visual field
  • Determine the preferred retinal locus
  • Assess contrast sensitivity
  • Assess refractive status
  • Screen for emotional and behavioral changes which may be associated with loss of activity and independence

Benefits of low vision rehabilitation include:
  • Prescription of optical devices and low vision aids
  • Training for necessary optical devices and low vision aids
  • Education and exploration of low vision strategies and adaptations
  • Referral to, when appropriate, occupational therapy or other vision rehabilitation professionals for therapy/training options that may include in office, in home, outpatient facility or combinations of care

You're likely to have several optical devices to help with low vision. This may include several different pairs of eyeglasses, a magnifier for close-up reading, a telescope for distance viewing, and other vision tools. Each optical device is for a specific task, so you'll probably have special glasses for driving, a magnifier or other glasses for reading, and other tools as needed.
